Statement of Apology by the Catholic Bishops of Canada to the Indigenous Peoples of This Land

We, the Catholic Bishops of Canada, gathered in Plenary this week, take this opportunity to affirm to you, the Indigenous Peoples of this land, that we acknowledge the suffering experienced in Canada’s Indian Residential  Schools. Church teaching supports global treaties

Facing many tragedies and disasters today, how might we pray and act with others for urgently needed transformation? Hope can be found in two vital international treaties which are highly consistent with Catholic teaching. The first is the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the second and more recent is the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Jesuit Conference Issues Statement on Boarding Schools for Indigenous Students

The Jesuit Provincials of Canada and the United States commit to studying the history of Indigenous boarding schools. “We write to express our deep sorrow at the recent discoveries of unmarked graves of Indigenous children at the sites of several former boarding schools in Canada. We grieve deeply the loss of human life and culture that took place at such schools, both in Canada and the United States, and we acknowledge that the Society of Jesus participated in that history.”

Call to the international community to support communities affected by extractivism in the Americas in their striving for their right to water

Pax Christi International, with its members and partners, listens to the cry of the communities and calls on the international community to firmly respond to the widespread human rights violations caused by extractive companies in the Americas. We wish to draw particular attention to the violations of communities’ right to water, as extractive industries—including logging, agribusiness, hydroelectric dams, mining, and oil and natural gas extraction—use and contaminate large quantities of their waters.

Recent statements from the Sisters of Charity of Halifax regarding the discoveries of unmarked graves on former Residential Schools sites

The discovery of the unmarked graves at former Canadian residential schools is a stark reminder of the most vulnerable and enslaved in our nations. We listen through the winds of time to the cries of hidden children, women, and men. Our breath is labored as we begin to understand the harms inflicted on the innocent. The discovery of these remains is heart-breaking and shameful. As human beings and as members of a religious congregation that served at two of these schools, we weep.

Discoveries of unmarked graves at former residential schools sites

Since May 2021, penetrating radar searches conducted by Aboriginal communities have reported the discovery of numerous unmarked graves at former residential school sites in Canada. At the time of writing, the number of graves found has reached 1148 at three of the 139 residential school sites: Kamloops (215), Marieval (751) and Cranbrook (182). It is very likely that more shocking discoveries will be made during this research process. In this context, the CRC wishes to share several points.

The Sisters of Saint Ann and our involvement with the Kamloops Indian Residential School

The Sisters of Saint Ann have a long history of commitment to the education of children everywhere, for their personal and spiritual development, their career opportunities, and their citizenship outreach. Years ago, with profound sorrow and regret, we came to realize that some of the teaching positions accepted by the Sisters of Saint Ann in British Columbia were part of a system that was destructive for the very children the Sisters intended to serve.
