Message from the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life to the consecrated persons concerning Lent in the context of the coronavirus world pandemic.

The Canadian Religious Conference has held a webinar to its members in order to provide information and answers to questions especially concerning religious communities in the context of COVID-19. The guest speaker was Dr. Valérie Julie Brousseau, surgeon in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck surgery.

On March 25, 2020 died Sister Colette Dubé, SSA, at the age of 92 after a short illness. In 1968, Sister Colette began work with the Canadian Religious Conference as Assistant General Secretary, in charge of the ongoing formation department during five years. In 1974 she was elected General Superior of the Sisters of Saint Anne. She took on this responsibility during the next 12 years. Elected Vice-President of the CRC, she was also a councilor of the UISG in Rome for a few years.

In order to provide detailed information applicable especially to consecrated life living and worship spaces, the CRC offers a series of recommendations written in collaboration with Dr. Valérie Julie Brousseau, surgeon (Oto-laryngology), with a degree in Research, Epidemiology and Public Health from Harvard Medical School. The aforementioned measures constitute responsible action for communities of consecrated life and for society.

“Now is the time for each one of us to respond to the worldwide coronavirus crisis by being in solidarity with others, especially with those who are most vulnerable and most at risk.” Sr. Jolanta Kafka, RMI, UISG President

The Jesuits of Canada, a religious order in the Catholic Church, has urged the Government of Canada to work “assiduously toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict now underway in the traditional territory of the Wet’suwet’en People”.

The Centre for Canonical Services (CCS) offers support regarding Canon Law issues. The CCS staff (consultants and staff members) is committed to providing expert canonical counsel to bishops, religious superiors and members of the Church who require assistance in addressing issues related to ecclesiastical structures and legislation.

We are religious, sisters long committed to social justice, climate justice and peace.  We write this letter to thank the Youth for their courageous leadership. #WeHearYou about the climate emergency!

Each year on February 2nd we mark the World Day of Consecrated Life. On this occasion, the CRC pays tribute to the consecrated women and men of Canada with a video illustrated with words from Pope Francis.

In 2015, Pope Francis declared February 8th the Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking. This date was chosen because it is the memorial of St. Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese nun who endured the trauma of human trafficking as a child.
