At its December 8 meeting in Edmonton, the Administrative Council of the Canadian Religious Conference (CRC) voted to renew its membership with KAIROS Canada.
“We are happy to continue our commitment within the renewed structure of KAIROS” stated Sister Michelle Payette, MIC, President of the CRC. “Our members asked that we work ecumenically in furthering questions of social justice, including Indigenous Rights, the safeguarding of Creation and other environmental issues” she concluded.
KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives came into existence in 2001 under the legal auspices of the United Church of Canada with a mandate to make a faithful Ecumenical response to the biblical call: “to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8). It has been engaged in a process of revising and up-dating the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) governing its relationship to its ecumenical partners who sit on its Steering Committee.
Over the past few months, the CRC Administrative Council conducted a broad consultation of its members. There emerged a clear consensus that the CRC should sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and continue on the Steering Committee.
The CRC looks forward to continued collaboration in KAIROS’ prophetic witness for justice and peace.
