Date & Time
24 November 2020, 14 h 00 min - 15 h 00 min

Join us on Tuesday, November 24 at 2:00 pm (ET), as Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj, SJ, talks about the alarming transformation of democracy in the world with the election of authoritarian regimes into office. His presentation will focus on India, the world’s largest democracy, with parallels drawn with changes taking place in Latin America, Asia, Africa and North America. Fr. Xavier will also speak of how justice, equality, human rights, and “development for all” are being redefined by authoritarian governments all over the world.

We are in a critical time today, not simply because of COVID-19, but because of the state of many democracies around the world. According to renowned scholar, Larry Diamond, “we have been going through a democracy recession” and the pandemic is “deepening and accelerating the recession.”

While this trend is alarming, we also find hope in the voices heard through public protest demanding alternative models of society. The courage of people, particularly young people, who oppose the democratically elected ‘dictators,’ demanding a JUST FUTURE FOR ALL, can lead to transformative changes for a future built on love, equality and justice.
