CCCB submits brief on Bill C-7

On 9 November 2020, in response to the meetings of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to study Bill C-7, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying), the CCCB submitted a Brief reinforcing its serious concerns regarding Bill C-7 and the steadfast opposition of the Catholic Bishops of Canada to euthanasia and assisted suicide and to its further expansion in Canada by Bill C-7.

The Death of Joyce Echaquan: Anti-Indigenous Racism

On September 28, 37-year old Joyce Echaquan, mother of seven, member of Atikamekw First Nation of Manawan, died amidst dehumanizing racist insults in a hospital in Joliette, Quebec. The Jesuits of Canada express our deep condolences to Ms. Echaquan’s family and community. They also express their solidarity with Indigenous Peoples’ frustration that systemic bias and discrimination against Indigenous Peoples in Canada continues to be widespread.

ad vitam – Summer 2020: “Laudato Si’: Caring for Creation and future generations”

In 2015, Pope Francis called out to the world to heed the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. The encyclical letter Laudato Si’: On care for our common home proposed a unified vision of the crises facing our planet and its creatures, including us humans. Five years later, we are in the midst of a pandemic that makes our interdependence glaringly evident. We need urgent change. After COVID-19 rethinking the social safety net

As the weeks passed with ongoing physical distancing and social isolation due to the emergence of COVID-19, Canadians are experiencing a new reality. With schools and countless businesses closed, many cars are off the roads, and with much industry shut down, air pollution has visibly improved.

Working for Peace in a Pandemic

Our current global circumstances present many challenges. One of the less obvious perils is the threat to world peace and the elevated risk that war and conflict bring to protecting people from the virus. For this reason, the United Nations has been leading a call for a global ceasefire until we contain the virus. In March, Pope Francis appealed for a global ceasefire as the pandemic spread, and Pax Christi supported this call.
