SUMMARY:A Just Future for All Webinar: Resisting a democracy recession
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, November 24 at 2:00 pm (ET)\, as Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj\, SJ\, talks about the alarming transformation of democracy in the world with the election of authoritarian regimes into office. His presentation will focus on India\, the world’s largest democracy\, with parallels drawn with changes taking place in Latin America\, Asia\, Africa and North America. Fr. Xavier will also speak of how justice\, equality\, human rights\, and “development for all” are being redefined by authoritarian governments all over the world. \nWe are in a critical time today\, not simply because of COVID-19\, but because of the state of many democracies around the world. According to renowned scholar\, Larry Diamond\, “we have been going through a democracy recession” and the pandemic is “deepening and accelerating the recession.” \nWhile this trend is alarming\, we also find hope in the voices heard through public protest demanding alternative models of society. The courage of people\, particularly young people\, who oppose the democratically elected ‘dictators\,’ demanding a JUST FUTURE FOR ALL\, can lead to transformative changes for a future built on love\, equality and justice. \nThis webinar is co-sponsored by: \n\nCampion College at the University of Regina\nRegis College\, The Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto\nSt Mark’s College at the University of British Colombia\nSt Paul’s College at the University of Manitoba\nUniversité de Sudbury/University of Sudbury\n\n \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Governance of religious congregations: Realities\, impasses and ways forward
DESCRIPTION:Presentation\nIn recent years\, the demographics of religious congregations have evolved rapidly. The accelerating decrease in number of members has led to significant capacity gaps. \nSeveral congregations are struggling to find people who are willing to take on leadership roles and ensure renewal within this function. This situation calls for reflection. \nAre other models of governance possible\, for instance through inter-community support or external specialized management services? \nWhat existing or emerging models could provide sustainable leadership and governance\, and allow communities to focus more freely on their mission? What criteria and issues should be considered? \nAudience\nThe Leaders’ Circles are intended for members of the CRC. They represent an opportunity for leaders to meet and discuss matters of importance for consecrated life and religious congregations today. \nProgram\n\nWelcome and prayer\nPart 1 – the governance and leadership capacities of congregations\nPart 2 – existing and emerging governance and leadership models\nConclusion\n\nLOCAL TIMES: \nNewfoundland Standard Time (NST) from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.\nAtlantic Standard Time (AST) from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.\nEastern Standard Time (EST) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.\nCentral Standard Time (CST) from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.\nMountain Standard Time (MST) from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.\nPacific Standard Time (PST) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. \nContact: mission@crc-canada.org \nAbout the CRC’s 2020-2021 programming\nFor the first time this year\, the CRC’s programming will be entirely online and interregional. The webinar approach will give us an opportunity to meet differently\, and to have more discussions amongst members of different regions. \nThe webinars will open up spaces for discussions\, allowing for meaningful exchanges of ideas and new perspectives. They will equip us and take us on a common journey of discernment about the role of consecrated life in today’s world.

SUMMARY:The psychological effects of confinement: Rebuilding communion and relationships
DESCRIPTION:Presentation\nThe confinement has tested community relations and the psychological well-being of several religious community members. It became apparent that some community members had been experiencing isolation long before the pandemic. Others lost their joyfulness and zest for life. The preventative isolation also increased the vulnerability of people suffering from cognitive impairments. \nAs a leader\, how can one help and support those most affected by these challenging times (relationships cut off\, grief\, changes to community life)? What processes could help communities name and overcome the psychological after-effects of the pandemic? How can faith help overcome a traumatic episode? \nThe objective of this webinar is to provide reference points for leaders who find themselves in this situation and help them in renewing community relationships. It follows up on the psychological impacts of the confinement which leaders mentioned during the May 2020 Zoom meetings and recent September webinars. \nGuest speaker\n \nFr. Daniel Renaud\, OMI\, member of the September 2020 webinar panel\, will join us again to offer some psycho-spiritual insights on the psychological impacts of the confinement shared by leaders. \nProgram\n\nWelcome and prayer\nOverview of the psychological effects of confinement followed by a discussion amongst participants \nPsycho-spiritual insights on the psychological impacts and paths for renewing and nurturing community relationships\nQuestions\, answers & comments period\nConclusion\n\nLOCAL TIMES: \nNewfoundland Daylight Time (NDT): from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.\nAtlantic Daylight Time (ADT): from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.\nEastern Daylight Time (EDT): from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.\nCentral Daylight Time (CDT): from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.\nMountain Daylight Time (MDT): from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.\nPacific Daylight Time (PDT): from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m \nAbout the CRC’s 2020-2021 programming\nFor the first time this year\, the CRC’s programming will be entirely online and interregional. Not only\, but we ourselves\, who have the first fruits of the Spirit\, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship\, the redemption of our bodies.” \nRomans 8:22-23 \n“… because of the exuberance of life and the longing to live; to express a passionate vision of the Earth\, and to seek an answer to the questions of my activity\, because I love the Universe\, its energies\, its secrets\, its hopes and because at the same time I am consecrated to God\, the only Origin\, the only End.”\nTeilhard de Chardin \nProgram\nMODULE 1 : Fundamental concepts of leadership\nLet us begin this journey together\, exploring some personal experiences of leadership and reaping the wisdom they offer. Let us become familiar with some fundamental concepts of leadership: role\, system\, purpose\, authority\, power… \nMODULE 2: There is no one way\, but we make our way when we walk \nWhat does it mean to exercise the leadership of consecrated life at this turbulent moment history\, in the world\, in the Church and in our congregations? \nMODULE 3: Weaving Communion\nAs leaders\, we are called to grow more and more in the capacity for dialogue\, non-violent communication\, managing difference in relationships\, generative listening… \nMODULE 4: For I know well the Spring that flows and runs\, although it is night \nHow is this leadership service that I live\, day by day; what is sacred space and transparency of encounter with God? \nMODULE 5: The poor teach us to read the gospel\nIn consecrated life\, can we be leaders and prophets at the same time? \nThe five Modules that make up this Program are full of questions. Our job will not be to respond to them\, but rather to develop an approach\, to acquire a mindset\, to integrate concepts that help us to explore them and to use them as a resource. \n \nSource: UISG

SUMMARY:Jericho House 10th Annual Ecology Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Sr. Terry Abraham\, Presentation Sister \nEvery bush is burning: Awakening to the presence and action of the Spirit in all that exists. A sacred time to make a pilgrimage of the heart… listening to the heart beat of the ONE echoed in the heart beat of the Earth\, in one another and in one self. We make this pilgrimage in stillness\, reflection\, in rituals\, in movements\, in story and song. We do this as pilgrims\, as disciples and as seekers. \nAbout myself: I am a seeker and a learner in the community of life and a member of the Africa Unit of the Presentation Sisters. I am from India and has been living in Zambia since 1988 walking with people on the margins (involved in Training for Transformation programme). They have been an inspiration to me. \nAfter serving on the Congregational Leadership Team I returned to Zambia end of 2013. Since then together with the local community and the Presentation Sisters initiated the Garden of Oneness: A Sanctuary of Peace and Harmony holding the Sacredness and Oneness of all Life. Currently I am living and working in this Garden of Oneness in a rural area of Western Zambia. \nContribution:\nResidents $550\nCommunters $400\nMake cheques payable to Jericho House \nPoster\n\n\n \nDownload the presentation of Sr. Terry Abraham

SUMMARY:Laudato Si’: heeding the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor five years on
DESCRIPTION:On May 24th\, 2015\, Pope Francis published Laudato Si’\, an encyclical on care for our common home\, thereby inviting the Church and the whole world to an urgent reflection and consistent action in all aspects of human life. The notion of integral ecology developed throughout the encyclical demonstrates the interconnectedness of systems and of the worldwide community called to rethink its involvement in sustainability: \n(…) the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet\, the conviction that everything in the world is connected\, the critique of new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology\, the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress\, the value proper to each creature\, the human meaning of ecology\, the need for forthright and honest debate\, the serious responsibility of international and local policy\, the throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle. Laudato Si' no. 16 \nTo reflect on the five-year journey since Laudato Si’ and its prophetic calls\, the CRC\, in collaboration with Development and Peace\, invites you to a webinar next Saturday. \n \nFREE PARTICIPATION \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED \nREGISTRATION \nOrganized by Development and Peace – Caritas Canada\, the CRC and GCCM – Canada \nGuest panelists \n\nStephen Bede Scharper\nAssociate Professor of Environment at the University Toronto\nToronto Star columnist\nSr. Sue Wilson\, CSJ\nOffice for Systemic Justice\nFederation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada\nRebecca Rathbone\nAnimator for Southwest Ontario and Caritas Youth Leader\nDevelopment and Peace – Caritas Canada\nAgnes Richard\nCoordinator\nGCCM – Canada\n\nModerated by Kelly Di Domenico\, Director of Communications and Campaigns\, Development and Peace – Caritas Canada.

SUMMARY:Habits of the Heart… Surviving and thriving as a young(er) Religious today
DESCRIPTION:Presentation\nThis retreat is for Religious 55(ish) and under serving the people of God in Canada (or with Canadian connection). \nThe retreat invites us to ponder the habits of our heart that we need to embrace or abandon\, to live and respond whole heartedly as younger Religious today in our communities\, church and world. \nFr. Ron Rolheiser\, OMI\, will walk with and lead us on our retreat. Our time will include input\, silence\, communal prayer and conversation. \nInformation and registration\nCost: $775 (or $875 for en suite bathroom) \nContact:  Céline Belliveau\, NDSC\, ndscgen@rogers.com \nRegistration deadline: June 1\, 2019 \nAbout the “55ish and Under” group\nIn 2017\, a novice with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary\, Michelle Garlinski\, suggested a retreat for “newer/younger” religious from\, or ministering in\, Canada\, so they could meet and journey together. The invitation was sent out and approximately 25 religious responded and attended a retreat in Saskatoon\, SK\, facilitated by Fr. Ron Rolheiser OMI. And this is how the informal “55ish and Under” group of religious in Canada was born. A second retreat followed in 2018\, again in Saskatoon and facilitated by Fr. Rolheiser. Out of this gathering\, a blog where new and younger religious share their stories was set up (aroundthewell.ca). This year\, new and younger religious are invited to gather for a retreat in Mississauga\, ON\, again facilitated by Fr. Ron Rolheiser (see poster). \nAbout the guest speaker\n \nRon Rolheiser was born in Macklin\, Saskatchewan\, in 1947\, into a large family\, to George and Matilda (Gartner) Rolheiser. \nAs a young child\, Ron’s father George\, along with his family\, and other German- Russian families\, immigrated from Saratov\, Russia\, and settled\, as homesteaders\, near the Alberta border where they established a community centered around St. Donatus Church in Cactus Lake\, Saskatchewan. Ron’s mother Matilda was from a family of homesteaders in a nearby area. After meeting George at a parish picnic\, they married\, acquired a farm\, near Cactus Lake\, within 4 miles of the original Rolheiser homestead. \nBoth parents died young\, in their early sixties\, within three months of each other. \nLife on a mixed farm included chores before and after school and helping with the seeding and harvest. Driving farm machinery as a teenager was one of the more enjoyable tasks. The family was active and competitive. Skating on frozen ponds in the winter\, pick up hockey games\, playing cards\, board games and ping pong tournaments were part of winter evenings. Ball tournaments were a huge part of the summer. Every weekend found the family at parish picnics and sports days where family members played\, coached and managed teams.  Ron’s love of sports has roots in these family times. Family birthdays\, feast days\, weddings\, and weekend dances often included cousins. \nEducation was highly valued by Ron’s parents. Excellence was expected and Ron rose to the challenge. He was an impatient scholar always looking for knowledge and ideas beyond the world he experienced. He shared a love of education and knowledge with his father\, with whom he shared a strong bond and mutual respect. \nFollowing his school years\, Ron entered the novitiate of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and professed his First Vows in September 1966. Ordained to the priesthood in 1972\, Ron continued his education\, receiving a B.A. (University of Ottawa\, 1969)\, B.Th. (Newman Theological College\, 1973)\, M.A. (University of San Francisco\, 1974)\, M.R.Sc. (University of Louvain\, 1982) and Ph.D/STD (University of Louvain\, 1983). During and after his own studies\, he taught theology and philosophy at Newman Theological College\, in Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada. \nIn 1982\, while living and studying in Belgium\, Fr. Ron began to write a regular feature column in the Canadian newspaper\, The Western Catholic Reporter. The column offered reflections on various theological\, church and secular issues. \nThirty-two years later\, the popular column is carried by almost one hundred newspapers worldwide. \nFr. Ron’s writing wasn’t limited to a weekly column during that period. His first book\, The Loneliness Factor (Dimension Books\, Denville NJ) was published in 1979. It was followed by Spirituality for a Restless Culture (Twenty Third Publications\, Mystic CN 1991)\, The Shattered Lantern (Hodder and Stoughton\, London\, 1994\, and Crossroads\, New York\, 1995)\, Against an Infinite Horizon (Hodder and Stoughton\, London\, 1995 and Crossroads\, New York)\, The Holy Longing\, (Doubleday\, New York\, 1999)\, The Restless Heart (Hodder and Stoughton\, London\, 1998\, Doubleday\, New York\, 2004)\, Forgotten among the Lilies (Hodder and Stoughton\, London\, 1990\, Doubleday\, New York\, 2005)\, Our One Great Act of Fidelity: Waiting for Christ in the Eucharist (Doubleday Religion\, New York\, 2011\, Secularity and the Gospel: Being Missionary to our own Children (Crossroads\, New York\, 2006)\, and Prayer: Our Deepest Longing (Franciscan Media\, Cincinnatti\, 2013). Fr. Ron’s book Sacred Fire: A Vision for a Deeper Human and Christian Maturity (Image Books\, Random House\, New York\, 2014) won Book of the Year\, Catholic Book Awards\, 2015\, and Best Book in Spirituality\, Catholic Book awards 2015. The Passion and the Cross (Franciscan Media\, Cincinnati\, 2015) is Ron’s latest book. \nFr. Ron is in demand and well known as speaker. Keeping an active speaking schedule\, his retreats and workshops have inspired many. Along with his academic knowledge in systematic theology and philosophy\, he has become a popular speaker in the areas of contemporary spirituality and religion and the secular world. Oblate Communications and Franciscan Communications has produced fifteen DVDs of his retreats that are well loved for both individual and group use. \nIn 1991\, while on sabbatical\, Fr. Ron was asked by his religious community to serve as the Provincial Superior of his home province. He served two terms as Provincial of St. Mary’s Province (Canada). In 1998\, Fr. Ron was elected Regional Councilor for Canada\, serving on the General Administration of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate\, in Rome\, for six years. In August 2005\, Fr. Ron became the President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio Texas\, a position he maintains to this day. \nFr. Ron still is very involved in the life of his large extended family enjoying their annual hiking trips and New Year’s celebrations. Most Christmases you will find him in his home church\, St. Donatus\, near the former family farm in Cactus Lake\, Saskatchewan. Fr. Ron is also known for his commitment to prayer and exercise\, a continuing love of sports\, his sense of humor\, his loyalty to his friends\, and the enjoyment of the odd cigar and fine scotch. \nSource: https://ronrolheiser.com/ \nPoster

SUMMARY:Decolonization and Climate Change\, a JEM gathering
DESCRIPTION:Presentation\nAt the JEM meeting last year were explored the themes of awe and wonder in our relationship with Earth with Dr. Heather Eaton. \nJEM want to begin uncovering the connection between the process of decolonisation and climate change. The recent IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report and the subsequent COP 24 [Conference of the Parties] meeting in Poland again urge us to find ways to challenge our skewed relationship with planet earth\, our common home. \nDecolonisation is a transforming process in which we seek to: \n\nPrivilege Indigenous voices so as to learn and be transformed by them\nRecover the wisdom within Indigenous cultures\, especially the ways of being in relationship with the land and its many species\nChallenge our dominant worldview of settler-society\n\nThe high levels [per capita] of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada can be understood as a long-term impact of the settler-worldview with its focus on exploitation for profit. Can the transforming and unsettling process of decolonisation draw us\, as individuals and as a society\, into a new worldview\, new relationships with the land\, water and each other. \nOn May 22 and 23\, Sylvia McAdam (Saysewahum)\, Jennifer Henry and other prominent speakers and activists will help us to reflect on the connection between the process of decolonization and climate change. \nCan the transforming and unsettling process of decolonisation draw us\, as individuals and as a society\, into a new world view\, new relationships with the land\, water and each other? \nSchedule\nWednesday\,  May 22 – Dinner and Free Public Lecture \n4:45-5:00 pm – Arrival & Registrations (invitation to leaders/treasurers or their designated representatives) \n5:00-6:30 pm – Reception and Dinner (invitation to leaders/treasurers or their designated representatives) \n7:30 – 9:00pm – Public lecture (invitation to everyone) \nThursday\, May 23 – JEM gathering for representatives from religious congregations \n9:00 – 9:30 am – Registration \n9:30 – 3:30pm – JEM Programming for representatives of religious congregations including an address from Sylvia McAdam (Saysewahum)\, Jennifer Henry\, third speaker (TBA) and a call to action with Citizens for Public Justice (CPJ)\, SHARE and Blue Communities. \nBreaks and lunch are included and will be taken during the day. \nAudience\nReligious communities\, staff and collaborators. However\, the public event on the evening of May 22\, 2019 is open to anyone who wish to attend. \nPrice\nThere are three different ticket prices: \n\nMay 22\, dinner attendance $30 (invitation extended only to leadership/treasurers).
