SUMMARY:Discover 175 years of history and the richness of a written heritage by attending a public reading entitled Archives Aloud
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 29\, in the context of the Journées de la culture (Cultural Days)\, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) are offering two presentations of a public reading\, Archives Aloud\, which includes projections and musical interludes. This activity invites you to discover the richness of the SNJM heritage by immersing yourself in the world of 175 years of SNJM history\, as preserved in written archives. \nThis first major public reading\, entitled Educate to liberate\, is perfectly in line with the theme of the 2018 Journées de la culture\, which puts words in the spotlight. In fact\, listening to the reading of texts from the archives is an opportunity to be enchanted by the resonance of the words\, to absorb all their meanings and to be captivated by the stories they tell. \nThe various archival excerpts which will be presented testify to the lives and commitments of sisters in several spheres of action. The readings will help reveal the deep and ever-present values of the congregation\, which\, inspired by its foundress Marie-Rose Durocher\, has been responding to the needs of people since 1843\, empowering them to reach their full potential. \nThe presentations\, each lasting approximately one hour\, will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Longueuil Convent Chapel. Please reserve as soon as possible\, since the number of seats is limited. \nOpen House at Longueuil Convent and Guided Outdoor Tour \nIn the spirit of these Journées de la culture\, SNJMs invite the public to take advantage of the Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to visit the historical rooms where the foundress lived\, the original chapel\, the Foundation House (the former parish school) and the museum dedicated to the pioneers of the first teaching congregation of women religious founded by a Canadian. \n\nIt will also be possible\, by means of a guided tour of the archival exhibition\, Educate to liberate\, to deepen the knowledge acquired during the public reading. Lastly\, visitors who would like to discover more about the rich heritage buildings on this site\, which is at the heart of the foundation of the City of Longueuil\, can register for the outdoor thematic tour entitled “If these walls could talk\,” offered at 3 p.m.\, by reservation. \n\nTo learn more about these activities (no fee) that will take place at 80\, rue Saint-Charles Est\, Longueuil\, or to register for the various approximately hour-long presentations which require reservations\, call 450 651-8104\, extension 0\, or send an email to reception@snjm.org. \nThe contribution of SNJMs to the activities of the Journées de la culture is carried out in collaboration with the City of Longueuil. It is part of the 175th anniversary activities of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

SUMMARY:Creation spirituality retreat: Christian faith and spirituality in an evolving cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Over the past half century\, we have become increasingly aware of a growing scientific consensus about the expanding universe that originated in a burst of energy sorne fourteen billion years ago and the evolving earth community that has become conscious in the emergence of the human. \n\nHow can Christian faith and spirituality\, developed and lived within the static and juridical categories of ancient philosophies\, be re-thought within the dynamic and physical categories of contemporary science?\nIs it possible that what materialist evolutionists often take to be the religiously ruinous consequences of scientific thought are in fact fresh openings to mysterious sacred depths of reality previously unfathomed?\nWhat in our tradition  needs to change?\nWhat must be retained?\nWhere do we encounter God in today’s world of quirks and quarks\,chaos and creativity?\nHow shall we pray alone and with others?\n\nThese are the kind of questions we will explore together in this retreat. \nGuest speaker\n \nSister Donna Geernaert\, SC \nBorn in Saskatchewan\, Donna Geernaert grew up in Vancouver\, BC. SUMMARY:23rd Annual CWR Conference
DESCRIPTION:The CWR has put together a dynamic agenda of speakers and presentations along with opportunities to experience the culture of the region. The theme of the conference\, “One Voice\, Charged by the Current”\, reflects one of the world’s greatest sources of hydroelectric power\, the Niagara River\, as well as the strength of our collective message in advancing the mission and image of Catholic Sisters. \nRegistration\nBrochure\nDownload the brochure\n \nRegistration Form\nFull package \nDownload the registration form \nNEW\n1 day package \nDownload the registration form \nPresentations\nCatholic Social Teaching and Communications\nMoira McQueen\, LLB\, MDiv\, PhD\n\nDr. Moira McQueen will describe how the Magisterium communications office is organized and the strategies used to communicate Church teaching worldwide. Pope Francis’ more informal communications style has tended to intrigue the general public. She explores why people are more interested in what he has to say and what we can take away from the Pope’s method. Dr. Moira McQueen has a degree in law from the University of Glasgow\, Scotland. She earned a Master of Divinity and a PhD in moral theology from the Faculty of Theology\, University of St. Michael’s College and the Toronto School of Theology. She has been teaching moral theology at the Faculty of Theology since 1994\, and has written and co-authored several articles in bioethics\, fundamental ethics and other areas. \nUsing Social Media to Inspire Millennials and Gen Z\nHeather Mansfield\n\nMillennials came of age using social media\, first on a laptop\, then on a smartphone. Gen Z is mobile first\, mobile only\, and the driving force behind a growing App economy. To reach either generation\, your organization must be adept at both social and mobile communications. With a focus on Instagram and Snapchat\, Heather Mansfield will highlight how each generation uses social media and will provide detailed how-to tips and best practices. Heather is the founder of the Nonprofit Tech for Good blog and author of the books “Mobile for Good” and “Social Media for Social Good.” \nProphetic Imagination and the Ethics of Communication\nSister Nuala Kenny\, OC\, BA\, MD\, FRCP(C)\n\nReligious life is a prophetic lifeform committed to bringing the “good news” of the Gospel of justice\, peace and mercy to the world. The range and diversity of media conveying news of all types today\, in a world of blogs and “alternative facts\,” is both astonishing and terrifying. Sister Nuala Kenny will discuss the advantages and challenges of modern communication in proclaiming the unique message of women religious. Dr. Nuala Patricia Kenny was born in New York and entered the Sisters of Charity of Halifax in 1962. Dr. Kenny is nationally recognized as an educator and physician ethicist. Her latest book is “The Art of Dying and the Paschal Mystery: A Compassionate Vision of End of Life Care.” \nA Practical Guide to Copyrights\nBlayne Haggart\n\nCopyright law has a daunting reputation. Unfortunately\, in an era of digital communication\, understanding copyright has become a necessity. Blayne Haggart will offer an introduction to copyright\, including its purpose and objectives\, and will suggest approaches to dealing with copyright issues as they relate to communications for women religious. Blayne is an associate professor of political science at Brock University in St. Catharines\, Ontario. His book\, “Copyfight: The Global Politics of Digital Copyright Reform\,” was published in 2014 by University of Toronto Press. \nCommunicating to a Divided Audience\nPeter Panepento\n\nWe are living in a world marked by deep political and philosophical divisions. It is increasingly difficult to create messages that span the divide. Peter Panepento will describe the tools communicators need to develop messaging strategies that appeal to a wider range of audiences. Peter is the principal of Turn Two Communications\, a strategic communications\, content\, and PR consultancy that specializes in helping nonprofits and foundations tell their stories more effectively. Before launching the practice\, Peter spent more than a decade as a contributing writer and editor at “The Chronicle of Philanthropy.” \nCreating a Culture of Effective Communication\nLoyola Institute for Ministry and Salt+Light\n\nThe Loyola Institute for Ministry recently completed a project entitled “Communicating Charism: Educating for Leadership and Social Media Capacity in Communities of Women Religious\,” which was funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Loyola representatives\, Fr. Tom Rosica from Salt+Light TV\, and women religious project participants from the U.S.\, Africa\, and Asia will share what they learned in the process. \nWho I’ve Met and What I’ve Learned\nSister Susan Doubet\, OSB\n\nSister Susan Doubet\, OSB\, will share the ins and outs of working for more than 10 years with Sister Joan Chittister\, OSB\, international lecturer and author of 50 books. She will share how she has “survived” this communications ministry on the local\, national and international scenes. Sister Susan is the subprioress of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie\, Pennsylvania. For the past 10 years\, she has worked as a research assistant to Sister Joan Chittister\, OSB. She also writes a twice weekly blog\, “Light Through Stained Glass Windows.” \nSpirituality of Communications\nSister Kateri Mitchell\, SSA\n\nSister Kateri Mitchell invites us to experience the heartbeat of God in a verbal and non-verbal society\, creation and world. The quality of our lives and spoken words can be a source of giving life to others we encounter. Ask yourself: Is my heartbeat in tune with the multi-cultural world in which I live: different age groups\, races\, religions\, diverse cultures and languages? Sister Kateri\, a Sister of St. Anne\, is the executive director of the Tekakwitha Conference\, an international non-profit organization for evangelization among Native American Catholics. She was born and raised on the International St. Regis Mohawk Reservation (Akwesasne). \nSchedule\nTuesday\, October 3\n4–6 p.m. — Registration\n5:30 p.m. — Orientation\n7:00 p.m. — Welcome Reception: Myst Lounge (34th Floor) \nWednesday\, October 4\nExhibits available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  \n7:15 a.m. — Breakfast/Visit Exhibitors\n8 a.m. — Welcome/Opening Ritual with Bishop Gerard Bergie\n8:45 a.m. — Catholic Social Teaching and Communications — Moira McQueen\, LLB\, MDiv\, PhD\n10 a.m. – Break\n10:30 a.m. — Using Social Media to Inspire Millennials and Gen Z — Heather Mansfield\n12:30 p.m. — Lunch/Visit Exhibitors\n2 p.m. — Prophetic Imagination and the Ethics of Communication — Sister Nuala Kenny\, OC\, BA\, MD\, FRCP(C)\n3 p.m. – Break/Visit Exhibitors\n3:30 p.m. – Prophetic Imagination continued\n4 p.m. – Break\n4:15 p.m. — Depart for optional evening out (MacKenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum\, Laura Secord Homestead\, dinner at the Old Winery Restaurant\, Niagara-on-the-Lake) \nThursday\, October 5\nExhibits available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  \n7:30 a.m. — Breakfast/Visit Exhibitors\n8:15 a.m. — Prayer\n8:30 a.m. — A Practical Guide to Copyrights — Blayne Haggart\n9:45 a.m. – Break/Visit Exhibitors\n10:15 a.m. — State of the Organization\nAngela Szczawinska\, CSFN\, CWR Chair\, and Nicholas Schafer\, CWR Executive Director\n11:30 a.m. – Lunch/Visit Exhibitors\n1 p.m. — Communicating to a Divided Audience — Peter Panepento\n2 p.m. Break/Visit Exhibitors\n2:30 p.m. – Communicating continued\n3:15 p.m. — Creating a Culture of Effective Communication — Loyola Institute for Ministry and Salt+Light TV\n4 p.m. Close of day; evening on your own or optional evening out (“Saint Joan” at the Shaw Festival\, Niagara-on-the-Lake) \nFriday\, October 6\n7:30 a.m. — Breakfast\n8 a.m. — Who I’ve Met and What I’ve Learned on the National and International Stage – Sister Susan Doubet\, OSB\n9 a.m. — CWR Business Meeting\n10 a.m. – Break\n10:30 a.m. — Spirituality of Communication — Sister Kateri Mitchell\, SSA\n11:30 a.m. — Closing \nEvenings out\nWednesday\, October 4\nMackenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum\, Laura Secord Homestead\, and dinner at the Old Winery Restaurant\, Niagara-on-the-Lake. \n\nVisit the restored home of rebel publisher William Lyon Mackenzie and experience 500 years of printing technology including the Louis Roy Press\, the oldest in Canada and one of the few original wooden presses remaining in the world! Then travel back in time to the lovingly restored home of Laura Secord\, Canada’s most famous heroine. After overhearing a conversation in 1813 about a planned American attack on British and First Nations allies\, she walked 32 kilometers through enemy lines to warn British troops of the impending invasion\, helping to change the course of Canadian history. Finish the evening with fresh Mediterranean cuisine inspired by the Tuscan countryside\, traditionally prepared and served in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It all depends on your point of view. Whatever she is\, eventually Joan is bound to become an embarrassment to the male-dominated world she has turned upside-down. And then what? Dinner on your own before the show. (The play runs two hours and 45 minutes. SUMMARY:Jesuit Canadian Canoe Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:The Pilgrimage\nThe Canadian Canoe Pilgrimage 2017 is a project of the Jesuits in English Canada\, that wishes to promote reconciliation between the First Nations\, French and English peoples of Canada. \nThe Journey\nA historic canoe voyage undertaken by Samuel de Champlain and St. Jean de Brébeuf in the care of their First Nations guides \n\nDuring the last five years\, Canada has been engaged in uncovering the tragic history of residential schools through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission\nThe goal of the pilgrimage is to promote a deeper intercultural dialogue and understanding\nThe pilgrimage will occur during the year-long celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation\n\nThe Route\nThis canoe route was first used by the various Aboriginal peoples who showed it to the early French missionaries and explorers. \nThe paddlers will begin the pilgrimage at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Midland\, Ontario on July 20\, 2017 at the historical site of the Jesuit mission to the Wendat First Nation dating back to 1638. The voyage will follow the shores of Georgian Bay to the French River\, which will then move along the French River to Lake Nipissing. From Lake Nipissing\, the pilgrimage will proceed along the Mattawa River to the Ottawa River. Paddlers will then travel down the Ottawa River to the St. Lawrence River and to their final destination in Montreal on August 15\, 2017. \nThe Paddlers\nThe paddlers will consist of Jesuits from both the French and English Provinces as well as First Nations Peoples and Jesuit collaborators. \nThe group of core paddlers will be expanded through an open invitation to people to join the paddlers at various key sites such as the French River Provincial Park\, North Bay\, the town of Mattawa\, and Ottawa. By including representatives of French and English Canada and the First Nations\, this pilgrimage will echo the original route made by St. Jean de Brébeuf and other Jesuits alongside the First Nations and Voyageurs in Canada’s formative years. After reaching the French River\, supply vehicles will follow the pilgrims to resupply and provide support. It is at this point that others will be invited to join the pilgrimage. \nIndigenous Ministries\n\nFor more than 165 years\, Canadian Jesuits have been living and working continuously with the Ojibway\, Odawa\, and Potawatomi Nations mostly in Northern Ontario around Manitoulin Island and Thunder Bay. Seeking God’s presence in the lives of the Indigenous Peoples reinforces the belief that Indigenous cultural values are not only worth preserving\, they must be celebrated and that all efforts possible be made to incorporate them into the broader Canadian context. Important then\, is the attitude that the Jesuits be attentive to the gifts\, the culture\, and the spiritual hungers of the First Nations peoples. \nThe Jesuits endeavour to share these gifts with those who prepare for local spiritual leadership and with those who gather to listen to the Gospel of Jesus Christ\, tell their stories\, and break bread in the Eucharist. The Spirit and Faith that animate this work justly reach into the needs of the communities\, their internal struggles\, and into the realities of the larger society that favours working with those living on the margins. \nDuring the last five years\, Canada has been engaged in uncovering the tragic history of the residential schools through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Commission published 94 Calls to Action\, “in order to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation.” (TRC Calls to Action) The Jesuits\, acknowledging their role in the residential school in Spanish\, Ontario\, are committed to the healing and reconciliation process. The Jesuits were given the opportunity to read our Statement of Reconciliation at the TRC National Event in Montreal in April 2013. \nThe Website\nhttp://canoepilgrimage.com

Since 2003\, she has lead Water Walks around the five Great Lakes\, and several other lakes and rivers\, including the St. Lawrence River. Always she does so to communicate respect for the water and to challenge the human activity that pollutes the water and puts it at risk. On one of the walks she said: “I’ve been called here to respect her\, to pray for her\, to sing for her\, give thanks to her\, to respect her in all that she is.” She firmly believes that women\, as life-givers\, have a special responsibility to protect the water as sacred\, as the “lifeblood of Mother Earth.” \nJosephine\, very humbly carries a copper pail of water on all the walks as she offers tobacco\, prays\, sings\, does ceremonies and educates others to take personal and political action to protect the life-giving waters of our earth mother. \nThe Anishinabek Nation has named her Chair of the Women’s Council for its forty First Nation members across much of Ontario. \n She will offer us her teachings\, share her story with us and invite us into prayer and/or ceremony. \nFor more information\, visit www.motherearthwaterwalk.com. \nMaude Barlow \nMaude Barlow is the National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians and chairs the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch. She is a board member of the San Francisco–based International Forum on Globalization and a Councillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council. \nMaude is the recipient of fourteen honorary doctorates as well as many awards\, including the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the “Alternative Nobel”)\, the 2005 Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Fellowship Award\, the Citation of Lifetime Achievement at the 2008 Canadian Environment Awards\, the 2009 Earth Day Canada Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award\, the 2009 Planet in Focus Eco Hero Award\, and the 2011 EarthCare Award\, the highest international honour of the Sierra Club (US). \nIn 2008/2009\, she served as Senior Advisor on Water to the 63rd President of the United Nations General Assembly and was a leader in the campaign to have water recognized as a human right by the UN. She is also the author of dozens of reports\, as well as 18 books\, including\, Blue Future: Protecting Water For People And The Planet Forever and her latest Boiling Point: Government Neglect\, Corporate Abuse\, and Canada’s Water Crisis.
