SUMMARY:CRC webinar - Governance... a toolbox
DESCRIPTION:Context and presentation \nThere are words and expressions that we hear so often\, they end up putting us off.  GOVERNANCE falls into this category. \nSo\, why come back to it? SUMMARY:From fragility to grace : Vulnerability as a space of transformations
DESCRIPTION:National webinar with simultaneous translation\nWednesday\, September 28\, 2022\nfrom 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 pm. (EDT) \nContext and presentation \nDuring the year 2021-2022\, the CRC offered programming including several webinars exploring the themes of charism\, prophetism\, and issues concerning the future of consecrated life (leadership\, governance\, statistics). From these discussions\, an important concept emerged: vulnerability. Consecrated persons experience it in various ways\, whether it be vulnerability associated with aging\, questions about community life and the mission of the Church\, the wounds stemming from abuse and scandals\, or pressing social and global issues\, vulnerability underlies the impetus for transformation. It can be a space for grace\, if we approach it with honesty and openness to the Spirit. \nAs we begin the 2022-2023 programming year (leading up to the General Assembly)\, the CRC wants to allow its members to explore this notion of vulnerability\, which is essential to the journey ahead. Interestingly\, vulnerability is at the heart of several recent reflections: Pope Francis addressing the UISG (Vatican News article)\, a speaker at the UISG (click here for text)\, and an article in the LCWR journal (click here for text). We are listening to the signs of the times! \nObjectives \nThis national webinar aims to :\n• Deepen the notion of vulnerability though several perspectives from the Bible\, theology\, psycho-spiritual accompaniment and the reality of consecrated life;\n• To approach vulnerability as a place where tensions call for transormation;\n• To invite a new outlook of creativity that can yield grace. \nPanelists \nA panel of frour speakers will contribute to this event.\n• Sr. Gill Goulding\, CJ\, Member of the Theological Commission\, will explore vulnerability as theological and relational notion;\n• Br. Daniel Cadrin\, OP\, Member of the Theological Commission\, will consider vulnerabilities at play in the Church and in consecrated life;\n• André Myre\, Professor emeritus of exegesis\, will offer renewed insights into the vulnerability of Jesus and what it calls us to;\n• Estelle Drouvin\, General Coordinator of the Montreal-based Centre for restorative justice services and spiritual counselor\, will discuss the role of vulnerability in the human journey. \nProgram \nThis webinar will be an opportunity to experience a different activity format. The majority of the time will be spent on the panel with light breaks. There will be no plenary session during the webinar. However\, for an in-depth discussion\, the CRC invites you to save the dates of Tuesday\, October 11 (in French only) and Thursday\, October 13 (in English only) for a post-webinar sharing circle\, at the usual time slot of 11:00 am to 12:30 pm (EDT). You will receive an invitation for these circles after the September 28 webinar. \nFor whom ? \n• Members of the CRC\n• Leadership teams\n• Any interested consecrated person (please pass on this invitation to your sisters and brothers) \nLocal Times:\nNewfoundland Daylight Time (NDT): from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.\nAtlantic Daylight Time (ADT): from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.\nEastern Daylight Time (EDT): from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\nCentral Daylight Time (CDT): from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.\nMountain Daylight Time (MDT): from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.\nPacific Daylight Time (PDT): from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. \nContact : mission@crc-canada.org \nThe Team of the Canadian Religious Conference

SUMMARY:Jericho House: 11th Annual Ecology Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Intimate Presence with Earth \nThomas Berry has written that in order to meet the needs of our times\, “we need a spirituality that emerges out of a reality deeper than ourselves\, a spirituality that is as deep as the Earth process itself\, a spirituality that is born out of the solar system and even out of the heavens beyond the solar system”. This is what the Universe (Cosmic) Story potentially offers us. During this week we will be seeking to commune\, to enter into deeper relationship and to establish an intimate presence with the universe. We will explore the way in which the Universe (Cosmic) Story is also our own personal story and how a greater understanding of this story can inspire a more intimate and more sacred relationship with Earth and those with whom we share Earth. \nGuest speaker\n \nNiamh Brennan (PhD\, School of Religion\, Trinity College\, Dublin) is a writer and workshop facilitator in the areas of cosmology and spirituality. She is author of ‘The Human in the Universe’ (Wyndham Hall Press\, 2014) and co-author with Greg Morter of ‘The Universe Story in Science and Myth’ (Green Spirit\, 2016). She has contributed to several journals including: ‘Religions’\, ‘Worldviews: Global Religions\, Ecology and Culture’\, ‘Spirituality’ and ‘The Furrow’. \nShe has written and presented courses\, lectures\, retreats and workshops all based on the new cosmology at the Marino Institute of Education (Dublin)\, An Tairseach Dominican Ecology Center (Wicklow) and at Mt St. Anne’s Retreat Centre (Portarlington\, Co. Laois). \nShe has worked with the Society of St. Columban for a number of years in the Philippines in Mindanao\, as a Project and Outreach Worker. During that time\, her perceived notions about society\, poverty\, wealth distribution and social change were challenged. This changed and influenced every study and career step she has taken ever since. \nRegistration & fees\nPlease register before May 31\, 2022 via email: leadership@jerichohouse.org \nRegister \n\nResidents $550 (CDN)/US $450 \nCommuters $450 (CDN)\n\nMake cheques payable to Jericho House. \nRetreat sponsored by Jericho House & Office of Province Life & Renewal | Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America \n \nJericho House\, 10845 Rathfon Road\nPort Colborne\, Ontario  L3K 5V4\n+1 905-834-0553 \n

SUMMARY:Leadership and Governance of Institutes: Update and next steps
DESCRIPTION:National webinar\nwith simultaneous translation\nContext\n\nOn November 10\, 2020\, the CRC held a Leaders’ Circle on the governance of religious congregations. One of the most pressing issues identified by participants was the shortage\, within religious institutes\, of members willing and able to take on leadership roles. \nTo follow up on the Leaders’ Circle\, the CRC undertook a consultation in 2021\, in Canada and abroad\, to better circumscribe the issue and identify existing options as well as alternative solutions in development. \nIt is now time to look at where our journey has taken us so far and explore ways to continue going forward. \n\nContent of the webinar\n\nThe 2021 consultation allowed us to appreciate the exceptional work accomplished by some institutes in Canada who\, for several years\, have worked to develop collaborative approaches and to proactively set up organizations that to support institutes with their leadership and governance challenges. Institutes in Canada can therefore count on an unprecedented degree of expertise and structured resources when compared with the countries we consulted. \nAt the same time\, expertise and resources function only in the context of the community discernment of an institute and are never a substitute for it. Identifying and developing leadership and governance ‘models’ or solutions must therefore go hand in hand with a reflection on the community discernment of religious institutes on the issues they face. \nThe webinar’s program will therefore comprise: \n\n\nA short presentation on the state of the question and the results of the 2021 consultation\nA discussion period\, first in small groups and then in plenary\, on the challenges community discernment poses for leaders\, and how the CRC can help them overcome these challenges.\n\nFor whom?\n\nMembers of the CRC \nLeadership teams\n\nLocal Times \nNewfoundland Daylight Time (NDT): from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.\nAtlantic Daylight Time (ADT): from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.\nEastern Daylight Time (EDT): from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\nCentral Daylight Time (CDT): from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.\nMountain Daylight Time (MDT): from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.\nPacific Daylight Time (PDT): from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. \nContact: mission@crc-canada.org

SUMMARY:Interpreting the statistics of consecrated life in Canada
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, the CRC conducted a statistical survey on consecrated life in Canada. The results of this survey\, available on the CRC website\, were presented at the 2021 General Assembly. In order to pursue this reflection on the statistical results\, we are pleased to organize a webinar that will address the possibilities of interpretation of these results\, as well as the questions and challenges that they raise. \nObjectives\nThis national webinar aims to:  \n\nExplore possible interpretations of the statistical study results;\nProvide a space for CRC members and their leadership teams to reflect on issues related to these interpretations;\nconnect these reflections to the process initiated at the last General Assembly and to the journey made since then;\nfuel the work of the CRC staff in anticipation of the upcoming programming and the 2023 General Assembly.\n\nSpeaker\nAs part of this process\, the CRC is pleased to collaborate with Sister Virginie Lecourt\, Xavière. SUMMARY:The Global Compact on Education: Exploring challenges and calls to build an integral education\, Ona B. Bessette\, CND
DESCRIPTION:The Newman Centre\, in collaboration with the Newman Institute of Catholic Studies\, presents the 2022 Marguerite Bourgeoys Lecture on Education. This lecture is a public lecture. The event will be by Zoom (not in person). \nJOIN EVENT \nMeeting ID: 370 101 7103 \nThe Global Compact on Education:\nExploring challenges and calls\nto build an integral education \nIn September 2019\, Pope Francis announced the Global Compact on Education in order to rekindle dedication for and with young people to renew passion for a more open and inclusive education characterized by patient listening\, constructive dialogue and better mutual understanding. He invited everyone to unite their efforts in a broad educational alliance to form mature individuals capable of overcoming division and antagonism and to restore the fabric of relationships for the sake of a more fraternal humanity. \nSpeaker Bio\n \nSister Ona Bessette has been a member of the Congregation de Notre Dame since 1982. Born in Waterbury\, Connecticut\, USA\, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford\, CT. She holds a Masters of Arts degree in Education from the University of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff\, AZ and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Administration and Supervision from Fordham University in New York City. In her doctoral dissertation\, Dancing at the Crossroads: Liberating Latina Adolescent Voice\, she explored the development of a pedagogy for the mutual education of Latina girls and their teachers founded on Paulo Freire’s concepts of liberating education and the spirituality of the Visitation\, which are central to the charism of the Congregation de Note Dame. \nFor nearly thirty years\, Sister Ona was a science teacher and administrator in the schools of the Congregation. In 2010\, she became the Director of Educational Services for the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers of North America\, a position she held for six years. During this time\, she worked with educators and students across the United States\, in Australia\, Ireland\, India\, Africa and South America. \nIn 2016\, she became a member of the General Council of the Congregation in Montreal and was elected Congregational Leader in 2021. \nThe History of the Marguerite Bourgeoys Lecture \nThe Marguerite Bourgeoys Lecture on Education was inaugurated in 2003 as part of the Newman Centre’s annual cycle of academic lectures. It pays tribute to St. Marguerite Bourgeoys\, the seventeenth-century woman pioneer of Canadian education\, who was instrumental in the establishment of the colony that would become Montreal.  \nThe purpose of the Marguerite Bourgeoys lectures is to explore educational theories and practices in the modern world in the light of Catholic doctrine\, ethics\, and theologically-derived understandings of the human person. They also aim to explore the important legal and social relationships between religious freedom and faith-based education as they are affected by various forms of secularism in the Western world.  \nAn academic committee oversees the selection of speakers and ensures that the lectures continue to give voice to important concerns facing the future of Catholic education both in Canada and abroad.  \nSince their inception\, the lectures have been generously sponsored by the Congregation of Notre Dame\, the religious order founded by St. Marguerite Bourgeoys\, which has a long and distinguished place in the history of Canadian education.

SUMMARY:Star of the North Retreat Centre: Aurora Living Module 2 - "Wilderness: From Slavery to Freedom"
DESCRIPTION:We are faced not with two separate crises\, one environmental and the other social\, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Laudato Si' #139 \nAurora Living aims to build an intergenerational\, cultural and faith community\, inspired by contemporary witnesses who are making a difference in the world. The program will empower contemplative living and stimulate action for contemporary needs and times. We will learn how Christian\, Indigenous and other wisdom traditions can guide our response to today’s environmental and social problems. Following the arc of Scripture (from Genesis to Revelation)\, we will ground the program in the prophetic principles of Pope Francis’ letter to the world\, “Laudato Si’” and maintain our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. \nAurora is a term meaning “dawn” but has also come to be associated with solar particles that appear to dance in the night sky in an awe-inspiring display of what is commonly called the Northern Lights. \nWilderness: From Slavery to Freedom\nLife is an exodus\, sometimes an exterior journey a long way from home (eg. the immigrant experience) and always an extraordinary interior journey. Exodus is the transformation of our consciousness through a time of personal or collective “wilderness”; an experience of distinct steps of awakening to the reality of Spirit. In this module\, we will hear the valued perspective of indigenous knowledge of natural law as this applies to intergenerational effects of residential school and of how the land heals us. \nFeatured Presenters\n\nRabbi Gila Caine\nLucie Leduc\nMorningstar Mercredi\nDaphie Pooyak\nFr.
