Theme: Intimate Presence with Earth

Thomas Berry has written that in order to meet the needs of our times, “we need a spirituality that emerges out of a reality deeper than ourselves, a spirituality that is as deep as the Earth process itself, a spirituality that is born out of the solar system and even out of the heavens beyond the solar system”. This is what the Universe (Cosmic) Story potentially offers us. During this week we will be seeking to commune, to enter into deeper relationship and to establish an intimate presence with the universe. We will explore the way in which the Universe (Cosmic) Story is also our own personal story and how a greater understanding of this story can inspire a more intimate and more sacred relationship with Earth and those with whom we share Earth.

Guest speaker

Niamh Brennan (PhD, School of Religion, Trinity College, Dublin) is a writer and workshop facilitator in the areas of cosmology and spirituality. She is author of ‘The Human in the Universe’ (Wyndham Hall Press, 2014) and co-author with Greg Morter of ‘The Universe Story in Science and Myth’ (Green Spirit, 2016). She has contributed to several journals including: ‘Religions’, ‘Worldviews: Global Religions, Ecology and Culture’, ‘Spirituality’ and ‘The Furrow’.

She has written and presented courses, lectures, retreats and workshops all based on the new cosmology at the Marino Institute of Education (Dublin), An Tairseach Dominican Ecology Center (Wicklow) and at Mt St. Anne’s Retreat Centre (Portarlington, Co. Laois).

She has worked with the Society of St. Columban for a number of years in the Philippines in Mindanao, as a Project and Outreach Worker. During that time, her perceived notions about society, poverty, wealth distribution and social change were challenged. This changed and influenced every study and career step she has taken ever since.
